December has started snowy and stayed snowy in the Austrian Alps with snow down to ever lower levels.

This past week has seen repeat powder alarms for 20-40cm of fresh snow in 24 hours at resorts including Mayrhofen (below), Solden, Ski Juwel, the Zillertal Arena and others.  Zell am See posted the biggest 24 hour accumulation of 47cm.

More than half of Austria’s ski areas are now open although some still only at weekends. The Dachstein glacier reports the deepest base at 3m/10 feet but the other glaciers are at 2m+ bases now in most cases with parts of the SkiWelt posting a 205cm base, the deepest for a non-glacier area.
