Arc’teryx Backcountry Academy, Whistler – February 9-12, 2023
For all serious snowsports enthusiasts, the Arc’teryx Backcountry Academy is an event on everyone’s bucket list. This past February, for the first time ever, the academy took place in one of the most famous Canadian ski towns, Whistler, BC, Canada.
With three days of backcountry clinics, the academy celebrated Whistler’s world class mountain culture, in a place that has always supported Arc’teryx right from its inception. By going back to its roots, the company proudly showcased its products in the very place that they were first tested in – a coastal mountain range with epic backcountry terrain.
The Arc’teryx Backcountry Academy was designed to give back to the local community, supporting several partners, including the Tsleil-Waututh Nation School, Indigenous Life Sport Academy, and POW regional and national chapters.
With three jam-packed days of backcountry clinics and two nights of unique programming, the academy celebrated mountain culture, with featured speakers, movies, and partner-led activations. The community programming created a buzz of like-minded skiers and snowboarders looking to further their skillset or celebrate all things mountain inspired.
The skiing and snowboarding clinics that were offered catered to a variety of skill levels, providing participants with the opportunity to learn from an Arc’teryx athlete and guiding partner. For those just starting out, there were plenty of offerings educating on the introduction to mountain sports – ski and snowboard. For those who had more backcountry experience and who were eager to improve their skills, there were several advanced clinics, some even ranging from 1–2-days. These clinics focused on improving technical skills, navigation, mountain safety, first aid and even photography. New this year, specific female or those who identify as female, clinics only.
In addition to clinics, attendees had the chance to ride and or ski with some of the world’s greats. The Arc’teryx Snowport Athlete team hosted clinics and mingled with the community throughout the week and weekend. Athletes included, Mike Gardner, Spencer O’Brien, Robin Van Gyn, Michelle Parker, Janelle Smiley, Tom Peiffer, Sam Kuch, Hoji and many others.
