Anyone For Cricket? (On A Snow Covered Frozen Lake?)

St Moritz is famous for its top-notch sporting events on its frozen lake, particularly its annual White Turf horse racing as well as show jumping events.

For the past three decades the resort has also staged cricket matches on the ice, but this winter, 30 years after the first tournament, the event’s organisers have decided to take it up a notch and create a new event for top notch players running around the same dates.

In a statement, the organisers say, “We at ‘St. Moritz Ice Cricket’ are bringing it to the next level! For the first time in cricket history, renowned international cricketers…cricket legends will compete on snow and bring a new form of entertainment to the world of cricket.”

So far those cricketing world superstars have not yet been named, but the event does have a new title, ‘St. Moritz Ice Cricket,’ (Previously it was merely “Cricket on Ice”), a TV Channel ready to broadcast the action for the first time, and a scheduled date – February 8 – 9, 2018.  Admission is free.

Meanwhile the original “Cricket on Ice” will be staged again from February 8 – 10, 2018 too.

Helpfully, St Moritz has provided some explanation as to how the game works:

“Players – usually male – dressed in white stand around for hours on an oval-shaped cricket ground and try to out-manoeuvre their opponents in what seems to be an almost passive manner. But appearances can be deceptive. The style of game played at Cricket on Ice on the frozen Lake St. Moritz demands a considerable amount of skill and agility from the players,” an online statement explains.
