A Bavarian Breath of Fresh Air

Over the past two years, it feels like we all need a serious breath of fresh air. Fresh mountain air, to be precise… We explore why Bavaria might be the best destination to escape it all this winter.

When you think of a winter wonderland, chances are that the image in your head looks a lot like Bavaria.

However, Germany is often surprisingly slept on by skiers and snowboarders, leading the Bavarian Alps to garner a reputation as one of the few remaining hidden gems when it comes to ski destinations.

With snow-capped mountains, gingerbread-style houses and magical castles rising among the peaks, Bavaria offers a picture-perfect winter destination, with epic skiing to match.

This winter, it offers British skiers some much-needed breathing space, a chance to escape, unwind and reconnect with nature.

There’s nowhere better to do this than at the Karma Bavaria, a stunning 4★resort hotel set in the heart of Bavaria’s best skiing region.

Nestled in the foothills of the Bavarian Alps, Karma Bavaria sits in an area of astounding natural beauty. It overlooks not only the surrounding mountains but also the spectacular Lake Schliersee, with its crystal-clear waters, waterside restaurants and entertaining beer halls.

It’s a wonderful base for those looking for a calmer break this winter, away from the noise and crowds of a typical resort, with the opportunity to explore a new area’s finest slopes.

FUSSEN, GERMANY – MARCH 16: Neuschwanstein Castle built in 1869 for King Ludwig Friedrich Wilhelm von Wittelsbach

Winter in Bavaria

Karma Bavaria’s carefully crafted ski packages will ensure you experience the best of Bavaria’s skiing. The resort sits just 20 minutes from the Spitzingsee-Tegernsee ski resort, a charming area with an impressively wide variety of runs and reliable snowfall, not to mention spectacular views.

However, there’s so much to enjoy in Bavaria in wintertime that this is probably one of the only destinations where we’d recommend taking a day off skiing (!) to experience some of the area’s many unique attractions and activities.

From classic horse-drawn carriage rides and ice skating on Lake Schliersee to castles, distilleries and sparkling cities, Bavaria’s off-slope activities are a little more unique than in a regular ski resort!

Our top picks? Explore the area’s rich history and culture with a day trip to the vibrant cities of Munich or Salzburg, or a visit to the dizzying heights of the Eagle’s Nest. Or take in one of the most picturesque spots in Europe with a trip to the famous fairy-tale castle of King Ludwig II, Castle Neuschwanstein. You’d be forgiven for forgetting you’ve got skiing to get back to!

However, the experiences here aren’t only for the adults! There’s plenty to entertain younger guests and families, from the dedicated Three Monkeys kids club (for those aged two to 11) to the highly impressive games room.
