Levi and Ruka ski areas in northern Finland have been celebrating just 90 days to go to the start of the 22-23 season.

The two northerly centres use snow-farming – stockpiling and saving snow from the previous season through summer –  in order to be among the first to open each winter.

This year the two resorts are aiming to go in less than three months’ time from 7th October, 2022, then to stay open for seven months to the start of May, 2023.

Levi announced last season that it plans to “build a glacier” by piling on the snow during the cold months so that there’s always snow on the ground 365 days a year – even if it needs to be covered with a protective layer to minimize melt from the summer heat in the hotter months.

The centre, Finland’s largest, did recently roll back the covers to allow for some midsummer skiing and boarding however (pictured).
