For over 150 years, Mammut have been making clothing, footwear and equipment for mountain adventures. The company actually began as pioneers in the design and construction of world-class climbing ropes back in the “Golden age” of alpinism in the Victorian era. Today, thanks to their commitment to innovation, Mammut have outgrown their Swiss roots and are a global leader in the design and manufacture of everything alpine – including some extremely nice and incredibly functional ski and board kit.
Rob Sykes is Mammut UK’s Marketing and Retail Manager, and he’s also #InLoveWithSwitzerland. We asked him about his job and what’s so special about Switzerland (besides Mammut).
What does your work at Mammut involve ?
It’s a very varied role and on a day-to-day basis it can involve everything from advertising to social media; from events to working with sponsored climbers. No two days are ever the same.
Do you have a favourite Swiss ski resort ?
It would have to be Grindelwald. I’ve visited there in both winter and summer, and it is an area that never fails to take my breath away. I love taking the train up to Kleine Scheidegg, Europe’s highest railway station, and the view when you arrive is utterly mind-blowing. A few years ago, I was lucky enough to be part of Mammut’s 150th anniversary celebrations where we had a party and slept in tents in the shadow of the Jungfrau – it was a great night! I love skiing in the area – there are some classic runs.
How did you first get involved with Mammut and what did you do before ?
I had worked with the MD of Mammut UK in a previous role several years ago. Then when the opportunity arose to work with Mammut I was actually working with another outdoor clothing brand, but jobs like this one don’t come along very often so I jumped at the opportunity.
What do you like most about Switzerland ?
Working for Mammut has meant I’ve travelled to Switzerland for both work and pleasure many times. I like the fact that wherever you go in Switzerland, travelling around the country by public transport is so simple and hassle-free. In addition, I’ve always found Swiss people to be very kind and helpful. Away from work, I’ve had the opportunity to climb, mountain bike and ski in incredible surroundings – I don’t believe that there’s anywhere like it.
How long have you been going to Switzerland ?
Well in the five years I’ve been with Mammut I’ve visited Switzerland several times a year, but even before I started working for Mammut I used to go to ski and board in the Jungfrau staying in Lauterbrunnen and Wengen.
Finally, why do you think holidays to Switzerland are better than to other countries ?
I think it’s a combination of things – loads of great activities to do, delicious food and great weather – pretty much everything you need for a great holiday.
