After Sölden last month, the World Cup tour moves down from the glaciers, but up to high latitudes in Lapland. Levi started snowmaking 5 weeks ago for the big event which has been staged here since 2011. worldcuplevi.com
14–15 – Freestyle Weekend, Snozone, Castleford, England
Rookie freestyle features will be open from midday over Snozone’s freestyle weekend. Just purchase a regular slope pass (or freestyle pass after 7pm) to get access. If you would like some coaching, you can join the “SHRED! Rookie” session on Sunday evening from 7pm.
20 – Park City Opens, Utah, USA
The new largest ski area in the US will open today in Utah. The merged Park City Mountain and Canyons ski areas will offer over 2954 ha, 300+ trails, 38 lifts, seven terrain parks, six natural half pipes, one super pipe and one mini pipe.
21 – Val Thorens Opens, France
Europe’s highest ski resort has one of France’s longest ski seasons, lasting almost 6 months. Val Thorens joins Tignes – which opened for glacier skiing at the start of October – as one of the few French ski areas open until the masses join them in coming weeks.
28 – Santa Claus World Championships, Samnaun, Switzerland
The Santa Claus World Championships take place once again in Samnaun, marking the start of the ski season there and the opening of the cross-border ski area linked to Ischgl in Austria. Teams of Santas from all over Europe and sometimes further afield compete.
29 – The Beach Boys, Ischgl, Austria
Just as the Santa Champs take place over the border, Ischgl also stages its annual big event to get its long season started too. There’s always a big music concert, with an international headline act, with admission free to lift pass holders. This year, The Beach Boys!
