Mt Baker, the US resort that holds the world record for the most snow ever accumulated in a single season, has received over 6m of snowfall already this season.
The ski area in Washington State in the northwest of the country passed the 6m snowfall mark just before Christmas when it received another 30cm in 24 hours.
Mt Baker has one of the world’s deepest snow bases for the start of 2017, with 3.1m of snow on upper runs. In the 1998/99 season, Mt. Baker received 29 metres of recorded snowfall, a world record, and most years it is one of the three snowiest resorts on earth, although last season it was beaten by Alyeska in Alaska.
Mt Baker does not always get huge snowfalls, however. It was forced to shut down in March 2015 due to a lack of snow at the end of a four-year drought on America’s west coast.
This winter, however, it started with 13cm of snow in October, then got just over 2.5m in November and 3.5m in December 2016.
